This project began when I found the vintage corseting elastic which makes up the pages of the book.
I began to see images of large varsity letters that the cheerleaders wore on their sweaters. In high school
I was too spastic and not flexible enough in my brace to become a cheerleader. However, this book in some ways, is like my own “cheerleading cheer” to the curvature in my spine, as each page spells out the word CURVATURES using a single letter per page.
The text that follows the capital letters is from various advertisements over the past 100 years, as well as my own feelings about the situation. An example of the text reads:
C: Clever Lines Create Beauty
U: Unequalled in style, grace, comfort and the admirable and superb proportions of the ideal figure.
E: Embarrassment
S: Sway in the natural rhythm of the body with those swinging lines!
This text is contrasted with images of girls in their scoliosis braces and various spinal x-rays, including my own recent ones still showing the curvature in my shoulders and hips.
