This is the first of two books in a series dealing with the issues of mothers, their daughters and the relationships between them (the second book is Causes of Female Influence). Also explored are the lessons passed along in those relationships that are echoed through the bonds that girls have with their dolls. Mothers were able to control the expectations that young girls had while growing up, as their daughters were playing with their dolls, they were absorbing lessons while at the same time were being trained in the rules of appearance and household skills – such as sewing, baby care.
Mothers were told “A well-dressed doll would have an important influence in the establishing a correct taste in the mind of a child,” and “…the child gets her start in taste as a doll-dressed baby, and develops it on her baby-dressed dolls.”
